Beware tax phone scam

People living in Northumberland are being targeted in a phone scam claiming to offer them a council tax refund.

Fraudsters pretending to be from Northumberland County Council have phoned up people living in the county with different stories to try to get bank details out of their victims.

The latest problem comes on the back of a spate of e-mails sent to small businesses in the county trying to get hold of bank and credit card details by telling them they had over or underpaid council tax and could face a fine.

Northumbrians can order their old garden waste to be delivered to their door thanks to a county composting scheme.

Household waste recovery centres in the county are launching a scheme so that households can buy back their old composted garden waste.

Last year the council collected almost 20,000 tonnes of leaves, grass and hedge and tree cuttings for processing into compost at local farms - saving this material from being buried in landfill sites, reducing greenhouse gases and also reducing the need for peat based composts.

Lynemouth are Morpeth Sunday League Division One champions, but runners-up Traveller's Rest, Choppington closed their league campaign with a point as Amble Pier 81 held them to a 3-3 draw. The final reckoning for the Morpeth Sunday League Division Two table will have to wait until next week after Blackthorn Rovers v East Chevington was postponed until next Sunday.

In Division One of the Morpeth Sunday League, Lynemouth have all but sewn up the league title with an unbelievable 19-0 hammering of Ashington Booze Brothers.

Marc Richardson (6), Andy Spratt (4), Antony Wade (3), John Ramm (2), Andrew Johnson (2), David Brown and Gareth Rees were all on target. Traveller's Rest Choppington can still draw level on points with their last game of the season next week, but Lynemouth have a goal difference which is twenty four more than their rivals.

Pegswood Ex-Services finished off their season with three points after a Lee McAndrew strike earned them a 1-0 win over Amble Pier 81. Linton and Woodhorn Social Club also rounded off their campaign with a win with a 3-2 success at Stobhill Social Club. Michael Scott and Ashley McAlpine scored for Stobhill, but a brace from Michael Freathy and a Richard Morris goal won it for the visitors.

In a copy of Liverpool's win in the 2005 Champions League final, Shilbottle won the Bilclough Cup final in a high-scoring game with Alnmouth despite being 3-0 down at half time.

But Shilbottle went one better by actually winning the game 4-3 in extra time.

Mathew Kreczar had given Alnmouth a sixth minute lead and with further goals from Joe Moscrop and James Swordy after 40 and 44 minutes Alnmouth were in control at half time.

The end of the season is coming down to the wire as both the teams vying for the title in Morpeth Sunday League Division One now have just one game remaining.

Lynemouth have put themselves in pole position following an emphatic 8-0 win over North Seaton Elephant. The win puts them ahead on goal difference, with a five goal advantage over Traveller's Rest, Choppington.
