Bedlington dad in charity performance

Doting dad Edward Lennie will be fighting back tears tomorrow when he performs at a plush ball on Tyneside.

He will be performing the self-penned Just Like An Angel at the Mistletoe Ball at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead - a moving tribute to his son Sonny, 10, who has cerebral palsy.

The ball is raising funds for the Percy Hedley special school in North Tyneside, of which Sonny is a pupil.

People in Northumberland are getting good adult social care, according to a new national inspection.

The Commission for Social Care Inspection has given Northumberland's adult services department a two-star rating, and says it has "excellent capacity" for improvement.

Bedlington Terriers eased their relegation fears in the Skilltrainingltd First Division with a splendid victory over Morpeth Town, who would have gone fourth-top had they won.

Recently, joint managers Keith Perry and Tony Lowery have improved Bedlington's fortunes but they were still the under-dogs at Welfare Park where the outcome was not decided until nine minutes from time.

Pupils given showcase for skills

Northumberland jam, African jewellery and American cookies were among the goods on offer at two internationally-themed markets staged during Enterprise Week.

All the items sold during the events in Bedlington last Friday and in Ashington on Saturday were produced by young people aged between five and 19, from 16 schools across the Wansbeck district.

Drivers without valid documents had to find their own way home after police seized 25 cars across Northumberland including five in Bedlington.

Over a five-day roadside crime crackdown called Operation Magnitude, officers in Northumberland used a hi-tech Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system to target cars and match number plates against a computer database.

Suspect vehicles were intercepted and in 25 cases were seized.

Christmas lights displays are about to be switched on in Wansbeck's three main communities.

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea's lights will go on as part of a carol service by local churches starting at 6pm on Sunday in the village centre piazza.

Bedlington's switch-on is on Monday evening outside the community centre in Front Street, while the Ashington display is illuminated at 4.30pm on Tuesday in a pedestrianised shopping area.

People in Northumberland are being urged to have their say on executive decision-making arrangements for the county's new super-council which takes over in April.

Consultations on the issue close on Friday so residents are being reminded to comment before it is too late.

Crowds flocked to a bustling market run entirely by enterprising school pupils.

Bedlington Market Place came alive with the sights and sounds of busy stalls as the pupils sold handmade goods.

Organised by Wansbeck Education Enterprise Network (WEEN), the event is the latest in an ongoing series of activities aimed at equipping youngsters of all ages with the tools that they need in order to become confident adults.

Big win for Bedlington Station Railway

Only two games in the Morpeth Sunday League survived the snow on Sunday.

In Division Two, Castington managed a 4-3 win over Wansbeck Riverside SC. Matthew Williamson (2) and Chris Martin got on the scoresheet for the Riverside, whilst Gary Grayson (2), Chris Black and Michael Hubbin won it for Castington.

In Division Three, Bedlington Station Railway picked up their ninth win to maintain their 100% record, and their 9-0 win over Amble Dock Hotel saw them pass the 50-goal mark in the league so far.

Liam Candlish led the way with five goals, Mark Gadsby grabbed a brace and Robbie Black and Sean Trotter also got on the scoresheet.
