A TOTAL of 38 people have been arrested during two days of police raids in Northumberland aimed at putting the brakes on the county's rising crime rate.

Fourteen were held yesterday for offences including drugs, violent crime and theft after Northumbria Police officers swooped on 23 separate addresses in Blyth, Bedlington and Cramlington.
CRIMINALS throughout Northumberland had a rude awakening as police carried out a series of dawn raids across the county.
Northumbria Police officers arrested 24 people at addresses in Ashington, Blyth and Bedlington as part of Operation Conquest. The arrests were for a variety of offences, including burglary, car theft and drugs offences.
Dangerous weapons, including knives and a baton, were also seized in what was just the first day of a six-month operation. Suspected stolen property and controlled drugs were also recovered.
Chester-le-Street improved their position near the bottom with a 3-1 victory at basement side Bedlington Terriers whose only scorer was Chris Philipson with a spectacular 18-yard volley.
By then, the Cestrians led with a free-kick from Craig Price and an individual goal by John Home-Johnson. Price was again on the mark with a 22-yard free-kick.
Landmark locations will be seen in a new light this winter with the return of a hugely popular winter festival. Northumberland Lights - and the award-winning team behind it - are back with more bright ideas for outdoor illuminations.
From November 2 to 30, the winter festival will bathe some of the most beautiful and remote spots from Blyth to the Borders in an array of colour, in celebration of the county's contrasting architectural and natural environment.
FREE bus transport for older students is set to leave Northumberland County Council with a £500,000 bill. But councillors last night hailed the scheme to provide passes for A-level and college students as a massive success - and said it was likely to cost much less than feared.
The free pass has seen the number of teenagers using buses more than double, from 800 in July to 1,850 now. The county council took the decision to scrap fares after they rose to £360 a year under the previous Labour administration.
Bedlington Juniors had a very good weekend with a number of encouraging performances from their sides in the Northumberland Mini Soccer League.

A MEETING will be held to boost numbers of the rare grey partridge in Northumberland.
The Northumberland Grey Partridge Group was launched three years ago by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust.
The trust is holding the meeting for partridge enthusiasts on Wednesday November 19 at Newcastle Falcons' Kingston Park Stadium, Newcastle, at 6.30pm. Grey partridges have suffered an 87% decline in the last 40 years and it is hoped that the trust's recovery programme, which relies on the support of local farmers and landowners, will help to reverse this slump.

If built, the proposed Morpeth northern bypass would complete a £50m investment in creating a new transport link between the A1 trunk road and the former mining communities of south east Northumberland.
PIONEERING efforts to develop the next generation of business entrepreneurs in the region were outlined to the Princess Royal when she toured St Benet Biscop Roman Catholic High School in Bedlington.
The school has become a specialist business and enterprise centre - forging links between education and the commercial sector - and its students have twice emerged winners of the regional Young Enterprise Company of the Year.
