A schoolboy's brave battle against cancer has inspired his uncle to complete a marathon, coast-to-coast bike ride and raise £3,400 for a hospital and children's charity.

Josh Cowell, 13, is currently undergoing his fourth gruelling course of chemotherapy after suspected glandular fever was diagnosed as advanced stage Hodgkins Lymphoma in May this year.

The pupil at St Benet Biscop RC High School in Bedlington has impressed his devoted family with his courage in coping with chemotherapy, the loss of his hair and the side effects of steroids and other drugs he is taking to counteract his condition.

Fire service plans for a £10m shake-up of 999 cover in Northumberland are finally to go ahead - three years after being approved amid a storm of controversy.

Work is expected to start early next year on the PFI-funded modernisation, which involves the closure of fire stations in Blyth, Cramlington, Morpeth and Ashington and the loss of about 28 full-time firefighter posts.

BEDLINGTON Terriers moved off the bottom of the Skilltrainingltd Northern League First Division and denied Ashington pole position when they won yesterday's derby at Welfare Park.

David Tremble unfortunately put through his own goal and Scott Bell made it two before the Colliers hit back through Mark Pattie. Terriers increased the tempo and late in the game Lee Ludlaw assured them of their first win in four attempts.

A CLEAN-UP operation was launched yesterday on a beach which was closed after a mystery pollution incident.

Workmen and machines from Wansbeck District Council moved on to Cambois Beach near Bedlington to remove the unidentified oily substance which was discovered a week ago.

The work started as results were still awaited from laboratory tests carried out by the Environment Agency to identify the substance and where it came from.

It was a record-breaking day of GCSE results at St Benet Biscop RC High School in Bedlington, where 20% of entries achieved A* or A grades and 72% got five or more A* to C grades.

Leading the way was Deborah Oakley, 16, of Bedlington who chalked up 11 A* passes. Allan Patterson and Jessica Hall both achieved 11 A* or A grades while Rachel Jefferson, David Nelson, Sarah Robe and Simon Humble all got 10.

Headteacher Nick Bowen said: "These are the highest grades we have ever had, and for 20% of entries to get A* or As is huge for us. Students and staff have all worked incredibly hard and the school is going from strength to strength.''

Bedlingtonshire High School has celebrated some of its best ever A-level results.

Headteacher Kieran McGrane said: "It was a really great year, the pass rate was 95% for Year 13 and 81% for Year 12.

"One of our pupils, Kathryn Gray, collected A grades at AS level in maths and the three sciences. She will now carry on her studies in year 13.

"Another pupil, Kelly Charlton, did very well, with A grades in Chemistry, Biology and English. She is going on to study law in Leeds."

More power to Wansbeck parish councils

Voters in part of Northumberland will go to the polls next year to elect their first-ever representatives on a new grass-roots network of local councils.

Five parish councils - the first in the Wansbeck district's history - are set to be created as part of April's switch to unitary local government in the county.

Terriers aim to recapture glory days

Tony Lowery and Keith Perry know all about managing in local football and they've been entrusted with the task of trying to recapture the glory days at Bedlington Terriers.

The Welfare Park club won the championship for five consecutive seasons between 1997 and 2002 but the last six years have proved barren.

"We returned to the club during last season when they were in grave danger of being relegated but we managed to stay in the top flight winning four of our last five games," observed Lowery.
